Location:
Cape St Francis is a tranquil eco-destination. This pristine beach, the mild temperature and the longest sunshine hours on the South African Coast ensure a relaxed all year round destination. There are wild life parks nearby so you can cuddle lion cubs, chase elephants or wander with Giraffes. ‘Endless Summer’ 1 & 2, feature St Francis’ famous right hand point. It has a great beach break and a second fantastic point called Seal Point, which is within walking distance from the conference venue. It is situated 20mins from Jeffrey’s Bay, and 1 hour from Port Elizabeth Airport.

Conference Centre:
The “St Francis Resort” has a section `the village’ we are utilizing with meeting room and restaurant. Read more about it here. These are beautiful rooms in a beautiful location.

CSI 8TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
With just 10 weeks to go, Roy Harley and team have put together a great conference. Guest speaker Shane Claiborne has recently released his new book, ’Jesus For President’. Mike Barrett, CSUS leader and author of ’Danger Habit’ is also confirmed to share a session. Sergio reports 20 Brazilians are amping to go, CSNZ has launched a fundraising drive for its team, Shinko Levey is looking at the long journey from Japan and Luis and Tommy from Venezuela have booked in faith "...it seems impossible in our economy but we believe God wants us to attend." Plenty of amazing opportunities surrounding the conference from game parks to township tours...oh and Roy says "Supertubes was 4ft and clean with just 6 guys out the other day!" CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships are our number one financial need! $US400 will secure someone like Made to attend. "Made is 20. He was our first Christian Surfer from the island of Bali and is on staff with us now. This conference will be absolutely life changing for him and way beyond anything he would ever get to do from his poor background" says Ado. To help Made and others like him attend, donate now by clicking here and selecting ’International Mission Development Fund’ and then ’International Leadership Scholarships’. There is currently leadership struggling to attend conference from Peru, Brazil, Venezuela and other nations. Assistance with travel is another huge need with climbing fuel costs. Even if you cannot attend, you can help enable someone else to! We are calling for a day of prayer and fasting on Monday, July 28th.

MISSION FIJI
Over May a 10 person team from CSNZ, Australia, USA and Portugal served the Fijian Surfing Association and local communities in a unique way. They humbly served, running learn-to-surf lessons for the Association and training more advanced members in surfing technique and competition performance. Time was also spent in a classroom situation teaching judging techniques before holding a surf comp to put this training into practice. The desire to form a CS group in Fiji was also expressed and the team was able to bless this group with resources and boards. EL SALVADOR EXPANSION
Salvador Castellanos reports "Here in CS El Salvador, things are going fast and great with now 3 chapters with almost 100 kids every week. We had a recent donation of a lot to build our first CS camp. We sent out our first short term missionaries Marcelo in Argentina and Christian in Panama." CANADIAN CONFERENCE
Evan Jones writes "I come from Montreal where the surf population has gone from 3 to 200 in a matter of 3 years, not to mention the other coasts. Surfing in Canada is setting a pace so fast that God is calling us to prospect HIS kingdom and to use our surfboards as our communicator. We are hosting our first annual national conference to unite the Canadian surf ministry, get a strategy, pray and train in leadership...oh and surf the standing wave on the rapids of St Lawrence, Montreal!" JAPAN SUMMER OF MISSION
Each year Christian Surfers Japan and Australia partner with Walking on Water for an exciting outreach to the massive unreached surfers of Japan. This September a team will head over to the tropical Okinawa Islands in the very south of Japan. If you live in Australia or Japan and are interested in being a part of this mission please contact Richard Agius ASAP as preparation begins very soon! CHANGED/ING LIFE - CHRIS ZANKO
Growing up in the northern suburbs of Wollongong on Australia’s beautiful East Coast, 15 year-old Zanko (the Chris part of his name isn’t used often), would find it easy to cruise through life. With great surf walking distance from his house, popularity at school and a healthy part-time job there isn’t much for him to worry about. It would be easy to fall into the usual traps of the drink, drugs and girls, also without much concern. Zanko has recently chosen to make something more of his life, however. Ditching the social norms and seeking a higher power is uncommon and the harder road to walk, but he has made this decision. He claims his local CS group is the catalyst for this. An avid bodyboarder, he has spent the last three years a part of the group, heading along every Monday night for the usual activity, hearing of this Jesus fellow along the way. Despite being open to the Lord through these years, the real change came after attending the CS Australia National Conference in Easter this year. The worship, fellowship and community inspired Zanko and, while he’s still just a cheeky grommet at heart, he’s given that heart to Jesus to shape and mould with plenty of years ahead.

ASP CHAPLAINCY UPDATE
CSI is currently developing an exciting new initiative, in conjunction with Sports Chaplaincy Australia, for the Association of Surfing Professionals. It will involve the formation of a Sports Chaplaincy Model for all levels of the ASP. Throughout 2008 CSI will coordinate trained chaplains to be at a range of ASP events with a presentation given to the ASP board in September, outlining how the trial has unfolded. It is hoped that the ASP will embrace the findings of the trial and approve a more formal model for 2009. The Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast was the launching pad for this year’s trial with CSI planning to be at a range of other key ASP events this year. ’Sporting clubs, whether at the grass roots or high performance level, recognise that that there is a need to care for athletes’ identifies Cameron Butler of SCA. ’They have different parts of their lives - vocational areas, family and relational areas as well as a spiritual need.’ CSI has developed a holistic approach to its chaplaincy proposal for the ASP which is planned to ensure individual needs are catered for no matter what the background or beliefs of the athletes, staff and officials. The service will be funded externally of the ASP to ensure the model reflects a heart to serve and give, freely drawing on CSI’s global networks and volunteer supporter base. BRAZIL OUTREACH
Surfistas de Cristo (CS Brazil) leader Marquitos Santos and Olie Boyer from CS Australia recently returned from a short-term mission to Fernando de Noronha where they spent 12 days on the island building relationships with the local surfers through servanthood and sharing the gospel with them. They were able to share with many local lifeguards, on the radio and even preach in a local church, which many surfers attended. All of this was during the 5-star WQS Hang Loose Contest, at which they also premiered the new Brazilian Christian surf film, The King (www.theking1.com.br) with pros from the movie present. CS AUSTRALIA NATIONAL CONFERENCE
This year’s CSA National Conference was held in the amazing Margaret River region of West Australia. Over 100 leaders from CS nationwide showed up with solid crews from Queensland and WA. CSA Board Member, Stuart Wesley, dynamically spoke on the function of the Holy Spirit in our lives, while great times of fellowship, worship, communion and an unforgettable time of group confession highlighted an amazing Easter weekend. The annual tradition of the floating cross, preceded by a dawn service on Easter Sunday was again carried out, this year in the Yallingup lagoon. Visit the CSA website for more info.

REVISED SURFERS BIBLE
Containing new testimonies from Damien Hobgood, Al Merrick, Bethany Hamilton, John McCarthy, Kahana Kalama and more, this evangelistic New Testament is joined with a zip cover full Bible and pocket-sized gospel of Mark. The first draft of the DVD shot with Holidays with Purpose in Sumatra is complete and production is well under way on the final version. Be ready to order the Surfers Bible in June! SOUTH ISLAND GATHERING
CS New Zealand had a great turn out for the first South Island Mini Conference/Gathering held in Christchurch. Members came from Dunedin, the West Coast of the South Island, and Wellington along with strong local support and hospitality from Christchurch. There were also representatives from Hamilton, Raglan, Snowboarders for Christ, and contacts were made with YWAM (skating ministry). Excellent one-day intense leadership training and team building by keynote speaker and interim Pacific Regional Coordinator for CSI, Alan Vink, set the tone for the first leadership development program. There was optimal opportunity for discussion, strategic development and training with intent, to build capacity within CSNZ. www.christiansurfers.org.nz

CSUK BOARD WEEKEND
The CSUK Board of Trustees met in early February at Polzeath, for their first ever weekend away; visioning, priority setting, and team building. One of the key areas of focus for 2008 was highlighted as the development and longevity of local core groups. "My name is Bradley Jones and I am involved in a ministry called Son Skate www.sonsk8.co.za, which is a part of Son Surf South Africa! (Christian Surfers SA) I have been a Christian for a good few years and there is still something that absolutely amazes me about God and his love for us! The simple truth that he loves us so much! When I was growing up there was lots of things that got me through the day, skating, drinking, kissing girls...all of them made me feel great, at least while I was doing them! The problem came when I was alone. You see everything that gave me acceptance was directly related to how much I was putting into it! If I was skating lots I felt like I was on top of the world! If I was drunk I felt great! As long as I was giving of myself I was getting in return! Then came Christ, someone that would love me because I was wonderfully made! Christ wanted nothing from me, I had nothing to give! Christ accepts us as we are! There is a scripture that says ’I love because he first loved me’. To this day I am still blown away by how great God’s love for me must be! I can’t comprehend it!!! The reason I do things for Christ now is because of his love for me! Not because I have to but because I want to and because I need to!"

I run a surf school on the west coast of Ireland and try to recruit Christian Surfers for the months of June(half)/July/August to come over on a mission/work basis.

If you know any one who is a SOLID Christian who would be interested in coming over sharing the gospel/working in the school and surfing for the summer please ask them to get in touch with us.

There is an interview process and all that but it would be great to hear from anyone you may know that would be interested.

The main jobs available are as a surf coach but we also could possibly hire someone in administration. To coach you need a to obtain two surfing qualifications which you can do here in May and get a work visa which is usually possible.

After a year of negotiation, the ASP will trial the concept of a chaplain on the WCT tour for 2008. Chairman Richard Grellman says, "We see the need for more wholistic support for both surfers and staff and CSI is a trusted group to help facilitate this." After some years of quiet, God has moved a number of surfing missionaries to Hossegor, France. Thomas Fedder is stoked to pioneer his board repair business. The Parenty missionary family from Australia have joined the Fedders and are looking to open a surf cafe. Francesca from UK is also moving to be available. CHANGED LIFE - MADE
"I grew up in a very poor family and decided to leave home at the age of 8 years old to find work but ended up living on the streets of Kuta, selling bracelets to tourists in nightclubs. One day I was approached by some Christians who had a street kid ministry and they offered to send me to school in Java. Although my heritage is Hindu I was raised within a Christian environment at an orphanage in Java. I still had to make my own decision about Christ and did so when I was 13. Several years later I returned to Bali and lived at an orphanage for street kids in Kuta. In Bali I learnt to skate and became a keen surfer. God led me to Ado and he shared about the ministry of Christian Surfers, which really made me excited. I was amazed when I saw the youth centre. Ado and Clair took me on as a volunteer, and invited me to come and live at the centre and serve on their team, as well as be the caretaker of the youth centre. This is now my job while I also finish year 12 at school. I get to skate and surf with the other Hindu kids and, even better, share the good news of Jesus. God is so good, this is more than I could ever have imagined!" Made, 20, joined CS Bali on staff in 2006. It has been an exciting year, with the HWP program proving the backbone of financial support for LEAP and in so doing enabling them to continue transforming the lives of those in need. I personally had the opportunity to join a group in early October, scoring some great waves, and was also blown away by the progress made by LEAP in the 12 months I was absent.

We have already had a number of bookings for HWP in 2008, those in the know taking advantage of the specials offered in the attachment. There have been a number of changes to the HWP pricing structure, with the intention of enabling more people to be involved whilst also increasing the support given to LEAP.

“Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

I can’t imagine what it is like to live in a dry harsh place where life revolves around the central necessity of water. I have always lived near the ocean with a life based around the ebb and flow of the ocean. Imagine whole communities existing around a water source like Jacobs well in the story of the woman above. Central to the community and a necessity for life, the well brings life and life revolves around it. We find our woman here drawing the water needed for the day. We know she is not accepted in the community as she is drawing water in the middle of the day, rather than the normal early hours before the heat of the sun scorches the already dry earth.

However Jesus always seeing into the heart, speaks to her of a living water that could quench the thirst she has deep within. She starts out talking about the well and the water needed for everyday life but ends up talking about eternal life.

Jn 4:13
Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,
Jn 4:14
but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

There are two things Jesus refers to here; one is satisfying that inner thirst vs 14a, not a thirst for water but the thirst for contentment, fulfillment, acceptance, love and belonging. All the deepest things that drive us. Secondly Jesus goes on to say that this water will become a spring welling up within to eternal life vs 14b. Not just becoming eternal life for the person who first receives the water but spilling out from their inner spring to become eternal life for others thus addressing another great human need the need for significance, purpose and meaning to life.

This woman had previously tried to satisfy her longing for love and acceptance through rela- tionships. She had found that the well she had built her life around ran dry on many occasions and so she had had many husbands. Still she was thirsty for her deepest desires to be fulfilled. Imagine a desert without a well, no relief from the driving thirst, not a well to satisfy instead just a few drops here and there that left her still parched.

It’s easy to see the need in this woman’s life and to see how she had encamped herself around a well that would ultimately fail to satisfy. But how do we build our life around things that leave us wanting more. Have we set up camp around a perishing source of water? Are the things we have looked to in our life for fulfillment going to run dry? I’m not just talking about the obvious things like security in finances and work or relationships etc. We need to examine these all the time but what about the subtle silent wells we draw from things like our own efforts rather than Gods strength? Do we draw from our well of religious habits and the practice of Christian- ity, rather than the well spring of the Holy Spirit within. Is our security and assurance gained from things external to God from the approval of others and the applause and praise of the crowd. Do we feverishly try to keep up with the people around us or do we try to keep pace with the spirit of God.

Our woman at the well was absolutely transformed by this meeting with the Messiah she had found a source of water for her life and she eagerly shared it with those around her.

Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.” Jn 4:40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. Jn 4:41 And because of his words many more became believers. Jn 4:42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”

What is the wellspring in your life? Jesus and his spirit or some other source?
Is your thirst quenched or are you left wanting for more in life look to Jesus he has the living water.
Does your sense of assurance acceptance; purpose and meaning flow from the right spring?

Jer 2:13
“My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.

2008 CSI International Conference

Our 8th international leadership conference will be held next August 10-14th, 2008 in Seal Point just 20 minutes from Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa. Online info, DVD and registrations are now available at the International Conference website.

Japan Leadership Meeting

The International Leadership Team and Board of Directors were hosted for their annual meeting by CS Japan during the week of October 14-20. A great time was had with the team meeting the Japanese surfers, training, strategic planning and even participating in a unique cultural experience in a Japanese bath house. National Conference, USA

The largest conference ever for CSUS, held October 16-20, was well attended by both chapter leaders and their new membership drive. New director Dean Plumlee outlined his vision for the future. Additional treats included pro surfer panel with the Hobgoods, a premiere screening of the new surf film, ’Walking on Water’, as well as surf ministry displays and inspiring worship. National Conference, New Zealand

Oct 19-21 CSNZ held their annual National Conference at Raglan. The theme was the training of leaders titled, ’Bigger, Better, Stronger’, and also included a joint Church service, a fundraising auction, an entertaining clip called ’the way we used to be’, reports, shots, DVDs and talks on looking outside of NZ, as well as solid feedback from the NZ group leaders. The conference was well supported by many different age groups, overseas visitors and the weather and waves were pretty good too. CSNZ is ’Bigger, Better, Stronger’ in God and set for exciting times ahead. Check out CSNZ online.

Brad Whittaker is directing the new Surfers Bible film and approached Australian Christian Channel regarding them showing it. They asked, "Do you have anything more like this?" Before he knew it, CSI was booked in for 13 half-hour episodes and Surf827 was created. Check out their website for more info and details on how you can view it live online.

Jesus Surf Classic UK

Once again, Phil Williams had the surf forecasters calling 4 days out encouraging him to cancel the Jesus Surf Classic, one of the largest and longest running events in the UK. CSUK felt God saying ’not enough’ before the event, ’just enough’ on the day, and ’more than enough’ after. Sure enough, the key divisions were postponed a week and, despite all forecasts, the rest of the events had JUST ENOUGH waves and the following week MORE THAN ENOUGH. World media reported this phenomenon and websites buzzed with God’s provision! CSUK have a major skate ministry network conference coming up next month. Dutch Surf Ministry

’Dutch surfers’ may sound like an oxymoron to some, but the surf community is thriving in the Netherlands. Kock, Martijn and team report a great fundraiser surf coaching day, with proceeds to support Peru CS in their earthquake disaster relief. A surf camp in Hossegor went well and they are key supporters of their national Dutch titles. Contact Kock de Vries.

Reunion Island

The French island of Reunion has had a small team of Christian Surfers meeting for the past two years. They held their first formal outreach film night to farewell Andy Hallsworth from UK who moved there to outreach to the surfers. Sean reports ’the heaviest locals all came along and got to hear Andy’s farewell speech and got a clear gospel presentation, it was amazing to build these relationships.’ Contact Sean Regan.

Changed Life - Paul Knight

Paul Knight is your classic Kiwi guy - hard-working, country-loving and has a body built for rugby! This same body meant he was a fighter as a grommet; had a good belly for beer and loved to party. Everything changed though as he spent time with Christian Surfers, firstly via a teacher, Steve Heard, at his school. Paul joined the CS group to get a ride to the beach, but after a couple of years surfing, watching and learning together, Paul finally decided to follow Jesus. It wasn’t an easy decision, but he jumped in whole-heartedly as he does with everything. Jesus came into his life and turned around his fighting, partying lifestyle along with much of his circle of friends, who eventually became the leaders of North Shore CS. These days Paul is the team leader of the group and also joined the CS New Zealand Board of Trustees; he even represented NZ at the recent Japan International Leadership Training. Paul is a natural leader, eager to be used by the God who turned his life around and thankful to Christian Surfers for helping him reach that point. He has a massive heart for reaching out to grommets and seeing their lives changed, as his was.

Surf827, Christian Surfers International’s (CSI) new TV program has started screening on the Australian Christian Channel. CSI has developed this exciting youth orientated program in conjunction with Sydney based production company Total Visual Unity with the 13 part series including up to date information on surfing technique tips, weather forecasting and travel as well as previewing surf films from those distributed by Move Me DVD.

Surf827 is also designed to be a hub for like minded surfing organisations, who have a heart to help and support surfing communities in need, to be profiled.

As Surf827 is a not-for-profit mission project many companies and groups have been very generous in supporting the first series. Some of the key supporters include Bible Society NSW, Christian Mobile Plan, Digerati Solutions, Oceanart, Walking on Water, Surfing NSW and Coastalwatch.

Jesus Surf Classic 2007 gets great waves despite predictions

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 September, 2007 : - - The Jesus Surf Classic was blessed with the only waves all week, for what is now one of the most popular events on the contest calendar. Once again, despite surf predictions of totally flat seas by most of the best known surf forecast web sites, the first part of this year’s Jesus Surf Classic was run of in good clean 2-3ft waves during the day on Saturday 8th September.

The ‘Jesus’ due to its increasing popularity was split this year between the traditional event at Croyde, and the Jesus Longboard Classic to be held at Polzeath over the weekend of October 6th and 7th. With over 130 contestants registered for the Croyde event, and the very gloomy swell forecast, it was decided to postpone the Masters, Men’s Open and Juniors to the weekend of Sept 22nd and 23rd.

Conditions for the remaining 4 categories, much to the relief (and answered prayers) of the organisers, started off on Saturday morning with a slight off shore wind and sets of around 2ft. With two peaks running, progress was swift, and by the time the tide begun to turn with sets now slightly bigger the semi finals and finals enabled all the surfers a great platform to produce a very high standard of surfing.

In the Youth event (Under 14) the final was between 3 Newquay based surfers, and a local Beau Bromham. In a tight final Beau took the title ahead of Leon Mansfield, Tom Good and Jack Hughes. The Junior Women’s division (Under 18) had the highest number of entrants so far in the contest’s history, and Swansea’s Beth Mason took the title from fellow Swansea resident Gwen Spurlock. Croyde’s own Kathleen Spears came 3rd and Katie Oakley from Morthoe came 4th.

Tom Good from Newquay, was 4th in the cadets, just beaten by Braunton’s Alex Baker, but the division was won by Woolacombe’s Stuart Campbell, ahead of Luis Eyres, currently living and training in Portugal. The women’s final once again saw Beth Mason and Gwen Spurlock up against each other, joined by Croyde’s Karma Worthington and Izzy Burke.

This time however it was the turn of Gwen to get revenge on Beth, beating her into 2nd place with Karma third and Izzy 4th. Half an hour after the event was completed the conditions worsened, and a couple of hours later it was flat again!!!

Organisers Christian Surfers UK were pretty stoked for the event to have been held in some great conditions for the younger age groups, with some great weather, and are looking forward to hosting the remaining 3 divisions over the weekend of 22nd and 23rd.

There are a few spaces remaining, so get you entry in early from the website christiansurfers.co.uk Apart from the surfing, the activities around the event kept everyone entertained with a big marquee as the base for the plasma screen showing surf movies, food, and exhibition of the work of both Christian Surfers and Surf Relief UK.

Both Saturday’s and Sunday’s skate contest drew good crowds around the park, built especially for the weekend, with the overall winners being Jamie Mather (Over 13) both days, and in the Under 13’s Jake Rush and Dominic Heyland took the honours on each day. Tom Walker won the over 18’s. The Surf Relief surfboard signed by 120 WQS surfers was on display, and raffle tickets were sold.

The draw will finally take place in November, and it is hoped around £800 will be raised for the work of Surf Relief UK. Christian Surfers UK would like to thank in particular all the Christian Surfer volunteers from around the country, Parkdene Holidays, the RNLI, D:coded Skate ramps, the surfers of Croyde for sharing the waves on Saturday, and God for producing a ‘phantom’ pulse of swell to run the event in.

Faith in Action Surfers Bible Film project runs from 20-30th August aboard the Indo Jiwa of ’Holidays with Purpose’. Surfers from the new edition`Surfers Bible’ will feature including Aussie former WCT Glyndyn Ringrose, pro bodyboarder Brendon Newton, USA surf TV hosts Shayne and Shannon McIntyre, kiwi junior longboard champ Kirk Beyer, USA super grom Tyler Hallen, Aussie longboarder Brad Whittaker and more. The film will take place in the Hinako Islands as well as Nias all of which were devastated by the Tsunami and earthquakes.

Europe Meeting

Some 36 leaders from 9 nations gathered together in Hossegor, France in June for a leadership training conference utilizing the CS Foundations Training. We met, shared, ate, surfed, learnt, dreamed, strategized and prayed for the vast surfing continent of Europe. Special thanks to Phil Williams for organizing as well as Thomas Feder on the ground. Great to get a commitment to relaunch CS France which has been a dream since our 2004 conference there.

Latin America Meeting

In July over 30 leaders from throughout Central and South America met under the leadership of new CSI Regional Coordinator Cal Fisher for our first Latin American conference. Friendships were built, vision cast, Foundations Training delivered (in Spanish) and some fun waves in Jaco, Costa Rica.

2008 CSI International Conference

New Look Surfers Bible

A completely revised Surfers bible outreach New Testament will be produced this year. In addition a zip cover full bible plus a give away Gospel of Mark will also be produced as matching tools. New testimonies from Bethany Hamilton, John McCarthy, Kahama Kalana, Britt and Al Merrick, Brenden Newton, Kirk Beyer are some. These testimonies include all manner of surfcraft, from every major English speaking surfing nation.

Spanish Surfers Bible

After English, Spanish is the most widely spoken surfing language. Finally, the Spanish surfers bible is ready for production. South African National Conference

The July Leadership Conference saw some 100 leaders meet for worship, reporting and great plans for 2008 including the relocating of the national office and staff to Jeffrey’s Bay...someone has to do it!

UK National Conference

Some 150 surfers camped out in a sheep paddock in North Devon for the 10th UK National Conference. Phil Williams was stoked to report amazing fellowship, inspiring worship, strategic planning and a great international contingent including 20 from Holland CS.

Changed Life

"I never imagined that God could use me as a surfer and as a missionary." Marcelo Castellanos from El Salvador has been sharing his faith with surfers since he was 15. Naturally gifted with surfing ability, personality and looks, Marcello is supernaturally gifted in evangelism as well. Soon many young surfers were impacted by him, including Christian Lama. With the support of his father Salvador and new convert Christian they began a small CS group. "I found Christian Surfers on the internet and wrote an email to them, but somehow never sent it. After some time, God stirred us and I found the email again and sent it...so much has happened since that day 2 years ago!" Today, their little CS group has over 50 guys meeting weekly, Marcelo is currently the number 1 ranked surfer in his country, the tone at major events is changing with surfers praying before they enter the water. They have the ear of the whole surfing community.

Christian Surfers will join with LEAP organisation’s ’Holidays with Purpose’ to produce a ’faith in action’ film that will be inserted into every cover of the upcoming ’Surfers Bible’ New Testament. The surfers will engage with kids club programs, canoe building, coconut oil production and orphanages as well as supporting surfing in these earthquake devastated communities.

There is a wide range of featured surfers included that will appeal to every style of surfer.

This film is about surfers giving back to communities and the motivation that Jesus brings to their lives and the hope they seek to share with others.

Scheduled for filming August 20-30 on the 100’ boat Indo Jiwa. Christian Surfers and Bible Society have secured over half the funds needed for this film and you are welcome to contribute to help secure this project.

CSUS Leadership Change

Christian Buckley, Chairman of the Board of Directors, is pleased to announce that Dean Plumlee has been selected as the new National Director of CSUS. After much prayer, the board is confident that Dean possesses all of the qualities necessary to lead this ministry into the future.

Dean began surfing not out of a passion for the ocean but rather a deep love for surfers and a desire to see them experience the joy of knowing Jesus. This love combined with the unique experiences God has lead him through has prepared him for this next step. Dean and his wife Amy were married in 1998. Both hold Bachelor degrees in Bible and have served in many different ministry roles, whether on the Pastoral team of local churches or rubbing shoulders daily with surfers in the construction industry or working in surf shops. Each experience has better equipped them to be used for the Kingdom.

Dean first became involved in ministry in 1990 and felt called to prepare to work with surfers in 1991. His first contact with CSUS was in 1994 on a phone call with Jerry Dow, the founder of CS in the United States. Dean and Amy began serving as volunteers in 1999 and came on staff in 2005. The Plumlee’s currently reside in Saint Augustine, Florida with their two boys; Adyn Kealoha and Kael Kekoa Asher, a foster son - Ramon Santa Perez and a scruffy dog Edy. We are excited about what the future holds for CSUS under Dean’s leadership.

2008 CSI International Conference. August 10-14^th 2008 in South Africa, venue being finalised. Roy Harley is stoked to be hosting it. A promotional DVD is produced and available, website and brochure coming. Stay tuned.

Foundations Leadership Training. Following on from our Brazil conference, it was identified that leadership development was a key need. A ’CS Foundations’ training course has been written and is being implemented globally. Meetings have been held in South Africa Feb, Australia April, Europe Hossegor June 8-10, Latin America Costa Rica July 20-23, Japan Oct. Talk to your international CS leader for more information.

Faith in Action Surfers Bible Film. A completely revised Surfers Bible outreach New Testament will be produced this year. Inserted in the back cover will be a free DVD. This will be of a movie with Holidays With Purpose involving surfers from the Bible giving back to the surfing communities of Nias and demonstrating their faith and story. Former WCT surfer Glyndyn Ringrose, US TV hosts Shannon and Shayne McIntyre, USA grom Tyler Hallen, pro bodyboarder Brendon Newton, Kiwi longboard champ Kirk Beyer and others are looking to participate. Part funding has been secured, just $US3000 remains, contact payments@christiansurfers.net if you would like to support.

Staff Movements. We welcome Aaron Hughes joining the CSI office as Operations Manager. aaronhughes1@mac.com Aaron is formally from CSNZ and will be managing communications, projects, admin and freeing BD up in the office.

Holland New Affiliate. One does not imagine Holland as a key surfing nation, but our newest affiliate is from the flat land. Kock, Rinanne, Martjn, Lianne and others are looking at ways of impacting the many surfers of the Netherlands. Welcome Netherlands CS!

Conferences Brazil, Australia. Held in the north at Forteleza over easter, Sergio and Marquito report that the conference was ’the best ever’ and stoked with even strong support from local churches for mission. On the same weekend, CS Australia held their 25th national conference including Easter dawn paddle out, inspiring worship, speakers and a crazy 80’s dance party.

Peru Visits Ecuador. A great example of an established mission visiting an emerging mission. CS Peru did investigative visit of Ecuador and encouraged a new mission there. There are a handful of CS people needing encouragement.

Costa Rica Update. Amazing activity these past months with the recent skate contest, Jesus Aloha surf contest and 5km walk a thon to raise money. The guys are stoked to welcome back Jim and Jenni Balderson back in Jaco balderson.james@gmail.com We farewell Daniel Looman moving on from national leadership and are thankful for his diligence over many years.

Canada CS Investigated. Cal Fisher visited river waves in Montreal with local Christian surfer Evan and was amazed to find a flourishing board riding community.

With leaders from as far afield as the sunshine coast to Perth the conference focussed on CSA remaining `True to the Core’. BD and Gill challenged the leadership around the `big’ core questions `Whose kingdom are you building’, `What power and wisdom are you relying upon?’, `Whose rights are you living for?’, `Whose lifestyle are you following?’

Great reports from each region about all that God is doing through an army of volunteer surfers.

The easter dawn service paddle our was sensational with some 80 leaders joining some local churches for beach service then the CSA crew hit the water and formed a cross in the waves.

Plenty of fun too with a crazy ’80’s dance party, surfing in free time, hanging out with the CSA family.

Be ready for the 2008 conference in Margaret River, WA!

Paddle a thon fundraiser for Compassion Australia. Local CS missions in the wollongong NSW region raised funds for sponsor kids by paddling 10km. over 50 paddlers raised some $6000. the paddle took 3 hours, tired arms all round.
