Christian Surfers South Africa
Christian Surfers South Africa was born in the early '90s when a few passionate young surfers wanted to share their faith in Jesus Christ with their surf buddies. This was at a time when surfers were generally not made to feel welcome in traditional church meetings, and so Sonsurf was born, an organisation bringing the gospel of Jesus to the hard core surfers of East London and Cape Town. It quickly spread to the other surf centres around our coastline, mainly through clubs, creating a space for surfers to discover Jesus and grow in faith while being accepted as surfers.
As the mission expanded and more clubs were formed, larger outreach projects were taken on such as hosting some of the largest contests on the local circuit (even with live Christian rock bands!) This led to youth camps with hundreds of wild groms, which led to the formation of more local clubs. From early days Sonsurf started to network with similar missions around the globe, and eventually around the turn of the millennium it was decided to form one international organisation and so the name was changed to Christian Surfers. A national office was established in Jeffreys Bay, along with an internship programme called CSALT to equip young people for surf ministry. A surf school in Strand was established and surf chaplaincy and service team ministries were birthed when CS was asked to serve at the ASP WCT event at J-Bay (Billabong Pro). And so our story continues as we share the Good News with our surf tribe and trust our God that every surfer and every surf community in South Africa will have an opportunity to know and follow Jesus.
