A CS rookie's take on the CSUK National Gathering 2016

Stoked, pumped, amped - which phrase is best? I'll just go for the lot. The CSUK National Gathering - what a great experience - what a great bunch of people - what a blessing. For those who don't know me, I'm Chris Woodman, I'm the minister/pastor of Lyme Regis Baptist Church on the south coast border of Dorset with Devon.
So, I've been surfing since I was 13-years-old (53 now!), brought up in Cornwall, got saved in 1989 and only just joined CS. Why didn't I do it before? Better late than never!
So what are my impressions of CS and the National Gathering from a CS rookie's perspective? Here we go:
To be honest it took a while for me to get into it (for want of a better term). Why, I hope, will become clear as I continue. It's probably partly to do with the fact that my whole life is bound up with focusing on what we commonly call Christian ministry. You know, core values statements, mission policy, ministry strategies, evangelistic activities and programmes, fundraising, etc. I'm constantly engaged in these 'trappings' of organised Christian community life, which can be pretty intense sometimes. Where do I go to get away from it all? Yep, you guessed it, probably the same place you all go, out into the line-up. Not that I switch off as a Christian. I have a good relationship with the other surfers in my area that includes ongoing Christian dialogue with some.
So I found myself asking the question, am I a Christian Surfer or a Christian that goes surfing? (or whether there is any difference!) It took till the last day of the Gathering to work this subtle tension out. So, what did it? In a word, people - Christian fellowship and family. That is what came finally blazing through at the heart of CS for me - a deep and compelling demonstration of the body of Christ as family. This is clearly a vibe that is a worldwide characteristic from the reports of the recent international gathering in Oz. I realised that I hadn't joined an organisation so much as an extended family.
This was revealed in many ways, not least through the open and honest prayers that were offered (and asked for). Especially on Sunday in response to Olly's teaching. People opening up their hearts to what God was doing in their lives - some really personal stuff. Yet it was so right, so authentic, so safe.
How, then, did it all come together for me in the end? How was the subtle tension resolved?
Well, let me indulge in a surfing illustration in an attempt to explain how I have come to appreciate what CS is about. First, and foremost there is the CS family; that tribe of Jesus' people that get what surfing is all about from a faith perspective. They are, as it were, the swell, the energy that flows; the people that Jesus uses to connect the gospel with the worldwide surfing culture. So, you could say the ministry side of CS is like a kind of reef or sand bar that takes that swell and intentionally shapes it into as perfect a wave as possible; a wave that will hopefully attract the attention of 'every surfer'. So, all the organisational 'ministry stuff', if you like, that the leadership and others do so well, is the Spirit-filled facilitating. This enables the family to be just what Jesus wants it to be - people who love to live the surfing 'life in all its fullness' which hopefully attracts the attention of 'every surfer'. CS creates the best conditions to support Jesus' surfing culture people (including the non-surfer surfers among us) to respectfully 'give a reason why we hold to the hope that we do when asked.'
So, am I Christian Surfer or a Christian who goes surfing? Answer = yes!

La reunión nacional CSUK – que gran experiencia – que increíble grupo de personas – que bendición. Para los que no me conocen, soy Chris Woodman, soy el ministro/pastor de Lyme Regis Baptist Chuch en la costa sur en la frontera de Dorset y Devon.
Yo he estado surfeado desde que tenia 13 años (¡tengo 53 ahora!), crecí en Cornwall y conocí a Dios en 1989 y solamente recién me uní a CS. ¿Porque no lo hice antes? ¡mejor tarde que nunca!
¿Cual fue mi impresión de la reunión nacional desde la perspectiva de un novato? Aquí va:
Para ser honesto me costo un poco agarrarle el ritmo. ¿Porque? Espero que se entienda a continuación. Probablemente tiene algo que ver con el hecho que toda mi vida esta involucrada con lo que normalmente llamamos ministerio cristiano. Ya sabes, declaraciones de valores centrales, políticas de misiones, estrategias de ministerio, actividades evangelisticas y programas, recaudación de fondos etc. Estoy constantemente involucrado en los elementos de la comunidad cristiana, que a veces pueden ser bastante intensos ¿dónde puedo ir para escapar un rato? Probablemente el mismo lugar que ustedes van, al mar. Eso no significa que me desconecto como cristiano. Tengo una buena relación con los otros surfistas de mi zona y eso hablar sobre el cristianismo con algunos.
Entonces me hice la pregunta ¿soy un surfista cristiano o un cristiano que surfea? (si es que hay una diferencia) Tuve que llegar hasta el ultimo día de la reunión para solucionar esa tensión sutil ¿cómo lo solucione? Una palabra, personas – familia y comunión cristiana. Eso es lo que finalmente vi como el corazón de CS para mi – una profunda y poderosa demostración del cuerpo de Cristo como familia. Esto claramente es un elemento característico del movimiento internacional según los reportes que escuchamos de la reciente reunión internacional en Australia. Me di cuenta que mas que una organización, me había unido a una familia.
Esto fue revelado de muchas maneras, en las oraciones sinceras y abiertas que se hicieron. Especialmente el domingo en respuesta a la enseñanza de Olly. Personas abriendo sus corazones a lo que Dios estaba haciendo en en sus vidas – cosas bien personales. Sin embargo era tan autentico y seguro.
¿Como pude resolver finalmente esa tensión?
Bueno, déjame usar un ejemplo del surf para intentar explicar de mi perspectiva de que se trata CS. Primero que nada hay la familia CS; esa tribu de seguidores de Jesús que entienden de que se trata el surf desde una perspectiva de fe. Ellos son lo que podríamos llamar el swell o la energía que fluye; las personas que Jesús usa para conectar el evangelio con la cultura mundial de surf. Se podría decir que el lado ministerial de CS es como un banco de arena o un arrecife que toma ese swell y lo intenta transformar en una ola perfecta; una ola que pueda atraer la atención de cada surfista. Entonces con todos los aspectos organizacionales de ministerio que hace el equipo de liderazgo son simplemente facilitadores guiados por el Espíritu. Esto permite que la familia sea justamente lo que Jesús quiere que sea – personas que les gusta vivir la vida de surf en toda su abundancia con la esperanza que eso llame la atención de cada surfista. CS crea el mejor ambiente para apoyar a personas con la cultura del surf de Jesús (incluso los surfista no-surfistas entre nosotros) para que podamos de manera respetuosa dar razón por la esperanza que tenemos cuando se nos pregunte.
Entonces, ¿soy un surfista cristiano o cristiano que surfea? La respuesta es si.
