On Saturday September 10th, fifty-six San Diego surfers of various ages, abilities, and backgrounds gathered together at Avalanche Jetty in Ocean Beach for the inaugural Jesus Fish Fest. In this unique, outside-the-box, community contest the playing field was leveled with all of the competitors surfing on identical 5'7" fishes during their heats. The four boards, shaped by legendary San Diego shaper Hank Warner, each represented one of the four Gospels that tell the story of Jesus' life. Each board was sponsored by a local church in the San Diego area and was only waxed up and surfed for the first time on the morning of the contest. At the conclusion of the contest a lucky draw was held to give away the boards to four lucky surfers, regardless of whether they won the contest or lost their first heat.

After nearly three weeks of minimal swell in the San Diego area, the contest went off in 3-4ft pumping surf at Avalanche Jetty. The competitors, many of whom had never ridden a fish before, were out of their element but absolutely ripping the bag out of the punchy lefthanders coming off the jetty. It was quite a sight to see surfers, ranging from 6'7" Encinitas local Nikolas Harth all the way down to sub-five-foot tall groms that were knee paddling the fishes out to the lineup, all riding the same board. Despite the huge range in size and abilities of the surfers, the fishes were surfed exceptionally well and some massive scores were dropped throughout the contest.

Shaper Hank Warner stopped by the contest and was thoroughly impressed with how the competitors were riding his signature "Starfish" model. This board features a pulled in tail with two pointed-wings at the top of the tail block making for five points of contact with the wave, hence the “Starfish” name. Just like the contest, the boards were unique and got surfers outside of the comfort zone of their standard high performance shortboards.

The Jesus Fish Fest featured three divisions: Groms, Girls, and Men's Open. In the Grom division the young surfers showed some serious versatility riding the fishes and were pleasantly surprised with how well they were able to get them around on their turns. The Grom Final was narrowly edged out by La Jolla grom Rafael Casto, who took down Jacob Kelly, Shane Tuschen, and Cole Hurst. In the Girls division, close friends Molly Tuschen and Jordyn Kelly took first and second place respectively over Rebecca Meuller and Elizabeth Cullum. The Open Men's division was hotly contested and there was some phenomenal surfing happening throughout the event. Ultimately it was Florida-boy Kevin O'Leary who took the win in a final where the waves absolutely turned on. Colombian Simon Salazar took second place with Kort Gibson and Alex Reynolds finishing third and fourth.

Each of the four Jesus fishes featured a scripture from the Gospels on the bottom of the board. The verse from Mark 4:41 really seemed fitting for the day: "They were amazed and asked each other, 'Who is this? Even the winds and waves obey him.'" With the cheers of excitement coming from the beautiful community of surfers on the beach, the 3-4ft waves pulsing through with gentle winds, and the overwhelming amount of stoke from all that were a part of the event, the entire Jesus Fish Festival seemed to be divinely orchestrated in way that was tangible and real.

All who were apart of the event were blessed by it and arguably none more so than the four lucky draw winners who left the award ceremony at NewBreak Church in Ocean Beach with brand new 5'7' fishes. A lot of thought and prayer went in to this event and seeing who ultimately walked home with the boards was an incredible blessing.

The Matthew Fish was won by La Jolla grom Warren Zamudio who was encouraged a few weeks earlier at a church camp to begin reading the Bible more and to start with the Gospel of Matthew. He listened to the advice, reading a chapter each week and left off at Chapter 10 just before the contest. Now Warren can read the scripture Matthew 11:28-30 off the bottom of his surfboard.

The Mark Fish was won by Austin Pardi from Encinitas who was absolutely shredding on the fishes the entire day and nearly decided to leave before the award ceremony. He's sure glad he didn't now...

The Luke Fish was won by Connor O'Donoghue from Ocean Beach who nearly didn't get into the contest and was the very last competitor to register.

The name drawn for the John Fish was La Jolla grom, Matthew Perrault, who was not present to win the board. Earlier in the day, Matty said he was willing to give up to his lucky draw chance to win a board so that someone else could be blessed by it. That someone else was Alec Humphries who postponed his road trip to Canada in order to enter the contest and have a chance at one of the boards. Looks like it was a good decision Alec.

El sábado, 10 de Septiembre, 56 surfistas de San Diego de diferentes edades, habilidades, y trasfondos se reunieron en Avalanche Jetty en Ocean Beach para el primer Jesus Fish Fest. En este único y original campeonato comunitario todo los surfistas surfeaban una tabla idéntica 5”7 fish durante sus mangas. Las 4 tablas hechas por el legendario shaper de San Diego Hank Warner, cada una representaba uno de los 4 evangelios que cuentan la historia de la vida de Jesús. Las 4 tablas cada una representaba uno de los cuatro evangelios que cuentan la historia de la vida de Jesús. Cada tabla fue auspiciada por una iglesia local en San Diego y fueron usadas por primera vez el dia del campeonato. Al final del campeonato se hizo un sorteo para regalar las tablas a 4 competidores, sin importar si habían ganado o perdido en la primera ronda.

Después de tres semanas de poco swell en la zona de San Diego, el campeonato se realizo en surf de 3-4 ft en Avalanche Jetty. Muchos de los competidores nunca habían surfeado un fish y estaban fuera de su comodidad pero igual surfeado muy bien. Fue realmente un espectáculo ver a surfistas como Nikolas Harth que mide 6’7” hasta niños que estaban remando de rodilla en estas tablas, todos surfeando la misma tabla. A pesar del rango de tamaños y habilidades ese día vimos muy buen surf con buenos puntajes durante el campeonato.

El shaper Hank Warner paso a ver el campeonato y estuvo muy impresionado sobre como los competidores estaban surfeando su tabla modelo “Starfish”. Esta tabla con cola tipo pez con dos alas creando cinco puntos de contacto con la ola, por eso lleva el nombre de “Starfish”(estrella de mar). Al igual que el campeonato, las tablas eran únicas y sacaron a los surfistas de su zona de comodidad y del estándar de tablas de competencia.

El Jesus Fish Fest tuvo tres divisiones: Groms, Mujeres, y Hombres Open. En la división Grom los surfistas jóvenes se mostraron muy versátil surfeando y realmente sorprendieron en su habilidad de hacer maniobras con las tablas. Estubo peleado la final Grom Rafael Casto tomando la victoria sobre Jacob Kelly, Shane Tuschen, y Cole Hurst. En la división de Chicas las amigas Molly Tuschen y Jordyn Kelly sacaron primer y segundo lugar respectivamente contra Rebecca Mueller y Elizabeth Cullum. La división Open estuvo peleado y hubo muy buen surf durante el evento. Finalmente fue el chico de Florida, Kevin O’Leary que gano en la final donde las olas estuvieron buenas. El Colombiano Simon Salazar saco segundo lugar con Kort Gibson y Alex Reynolds sacando tercer y cuatro lugar respectivamente.

Cada uno de las cuatro tablas tenían versículos de los evangelio. El versículo de Marcos 4:41 realmente parecía encajar bien ese día: “ Se asombraron y preguntaron uno al otro, ‘Ellos estaban espantados y se decían unos a otros: ¿Quién es éste, que hasta el viento y el mar le obedecen?’” Con mucha emoción de la comunidad de surfistas en la playa. Las ola de 3-4 ft rompiendo con un viento suave, y mucha buena onda de todos los que fueron parte del evento, el Jesus Fish Festival parecía ser movido por Dios de una forma tangible y real.

Todos los participantes fueron bendecidos y probablemente nadie mas que los cuatro afortunados que ganaron las tablas en la ceremonia de premiación en la iglesia NewBreak en Ocean beach sus nuevos fish 5’7”. Mucha planificación y oración fueron parte de este evento y fue una gran bendición ver quien finalmente se quedo con estas tablas.

El Fish Mateo lo gano el grom de la Jolla Warren Zamudio que fue animado unas semanas antes en la iglesia a empezar a leer mas la Biblia y empezar en el evangelio de Mateo. El escucho ese consejo, leyendo un capitulo cada semana había quedado en capitulo 10 justo antes del campeonato. Ahora Warren puede leer la escritura de Mateo 11:28-30 que esta en su tabla de surf.

El fish Marcos fue ganado por Austin Pardi de Encinitas que la estaba matando con el fish todo el dia y casi se fue antes de la premiación. Ahora esta feliz que se quedo…

El fish Lucas lo gano Connor O’Donoghue de Ocean Beach que casi no llego al campeonato y fue el ultimo competidor en registrarse.

El nombre para el fish Juan era el grom de La Jolla, Mateo Perrault, que no estaba presente para ganar la tabla. Antes ese dia, Matty dijo que estaba dispuesto a entregar su oportunidad para ganar la tabla para que otro pueda ser bendecido. Esa persona fue Alec humphries que retraso su viaje a Canadá para poder estar en el campeonato y tener la oportunidad de ganar una de las tablas. Parece que fue una buena decisión de Alec.

El Jesus Fish Fest fue un evento de Surf Church San Diego que es una comunidad de amigos que aman el surf y tienen el deseo de compartir su fe, gozo, y vida juntos.
