Revelations from the Word
I watch a fair amount of competitive surfing courtesy of the WSL. In post-heat interviews surfers will often mention how they ‘prayed’ and God came through for them. Or how they trusted God to make the heat and he sent him/her the perfect wave to acquire the score needed. It often feels like the surfers identify with a God that they want. And not necessarily a God that they need.
In the book of John, Jesus consistently battled with Pharisees and Jewish teachers of the law that also desired a God who would do things ‘their’ way. A God that fitted into their worldview. But they missed the point. God isn’t here to fit into your life. We are called to sacrifice and adjust our lives to worship Him.
I love this verse in John, where Jesus was approached in the temple by a group of Pharisees, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” It’s like asking God if he’s God. If you’re not able to see God when he becomes flesh, then perhaps it’s your heart that needs the adjusting. Maybe it’s time to stop looking for the God you want to win the heat and maybe it’s time to worship the God you desperately need. - Cyle Myers
