Mine or His
Couple weeks ago, my two-and-a-half-year-old son came home armed with a new word. We were playing on the floor with his toy cars until next minute he grabbed my toy car and said, ‘mine’.
I was like, “cool! new word!” As I picked up another car and continued to play. Turns out (silly me) that that car was also ‘mine’ and he proceeded to remove that car from my car as well.
Whenever my son arms himself with a new word, generally, kindergarten is to blame. In the Kindergarten arena where resources are scarce and crying children aplenty, the word ‘mine’ is a bazooka on the battlefield.
While trying to inform Pascal that even though the cars are in fact his, it’s important to share and live life with an open hand - I couldn’t help but recognise the hypocrisy in my guidance.
Western society encourages mine.
My house.
My surfboards.
My cars.
My wave.
My time.
It’s my time.
But Jesus said: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:13
In order to truly embrace this statement we have to let go of the ‘mines’ in our lives.
My house belongs to Jesus. My surfboards. My time. And my bank account. Belongs to Jesus
It’s only when the ‘mines’ belong to Him - that we can lay down our life for a friend.
