April: Discipleship to Christ

Last month we unpacked the idea of #CostlyGrace inspired by the writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer in his book, ‘The Cost of Discipleship’. Dietrich writes - which cost God much, cannot be cheap for us. The natural conclusion to a grace which cost much is discipleship to Christ. 

When Jesus called Matthew, Matthew was sitting at his tax collectors booth. “As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.” Matthew 9:9.

He followed Him.

He didn’t follow Him tomorrow. Or cleanup his tax collectors booth. Say goodbye to family. Or organise any part of his life. The Bible says… he followed. 

There’s a temptation to brush over this verse. This call to discipleship. There lies in us an urge to explain the abrupt change of life course through logical discourse. But nothing about leaving your vocation is pragmatic. Yet the irony is, when we follow the call of Christ into the unknown, the Creator of the universe becomes Our provider. Our protecter. Our healer. Our peace.
